There are four categories of children in the Emmanuel Center;

Street children: a street child is a child who may live full-time on the street or part-time. These children may have living relatives but for whatever reason are forced on the streets to beg for food and money. Many times to provide income for the family and most times to provide income to support abusive habits like drugs and alcohol. Some street children are themselves addicts. These children have no self esteem, little life skills, many times no education, many times are involved in unlawful activity, they are extremely bitter and full of anger, many are sexual abused and so will suffer with life long struggles of trust and healthy love, and many come from neglectful homes and do suffer with lifelong social dis-function.

Orphans:an orphan is a child which the breadwinner of the family has died. The breadwinner may be the mother or the father but at this point the child has no financial support. An orphan may also have neither parent.

Vulnerable children: a vulnerable child is a child who comes from extreme hunger, extreme abuse or extreme neglect. These children are not street smart. These children have grown up as normal children in unhealthy homes. These children depending on the situation where they come from, have many issues varying from self-hate to reclouse behaviour to extreme anger issues etc.

Community children: These are children who are too old or have too many resources to qualify as one of the above categories but still the Center supports them in alternative ways. This group has nothing in common with others in the group. Every child in this group is a special case to which an exception has been made. Some of the children in this group are supported financially by paying for boarding schools. Some are supported monthly with a gift of food to help assist a struggling family and some have major medical needs.

There are several ways that they receive children;
Some children are referred by the government or court system
Some are referred by village leaders
Some children they meet on the streets and they take them from there
Some children show up at the front door
Once they have done background checks then they know if the child qualifies.

Community children are disadvantaged children that don't fall in the catergory to be accepted at the center. For example; they are too old but are still in school or they have family that is able to house them in a healthy environment.

Dit zijn de vier groepen kinderen die we zoal opvangen
